How to Check and Reseal Windows

It's very important to check your windows for drafts because drafty windows can make it much more difficult to heat or cool your home throughout the year (and cost you more money!) Windows don’t require the most extensive upkeep however, regular cleaning, caulking and glazing help keep them in pristine condition and working as efficiently as possible. What tools and materials will you need to handle this task?

Tools and Materials Needed

  • A Candle

  • Caulk / Caulking Gun

  • Glazing Putty/ Putty Knife

Steps to Check and Reseal Your Windows in 4 Steps

Step 1. Check for a Draft

Check to see if air is seeping through closed windows. During cold weather, drafts of cold air may be obvious but in the summer that’s obviously not an issue. The best way to check for a breeze would be to hold a lit candle on a breezy day to see if the flame bends. This shows that there could be air pushing through the window.

Step 2. Check Caulk and Scrape Away Loose Areas

You can use caulk softener to help remove old caulk more easily. Remove as much of the old caulk as possible to ensure that the new caulk will adhere properly and give the window a good seal.

Step 3. Add New Glaze

Clean the area of any dirt or dust that may get in the way of the new glaze, before this is applied. The glazing will come in a small tub you will need a knife or applicator. Scoop out a small amount of the glaze, then apply to the area to create a smooth slope, along the panel of the window.

Note- Re-glazing windows requires a longer dry time (and extends the project timeline from a few days to a few weeks). Paint over the glazing once it has hardened.

Step 4. Apply New Caulk

Cut the tip off of the gun and apply the caulk by moving the gun along the seam. When filling bigger gaps, move slowly to let the caulk fill the entire space. You do not want gaps. Finally, wet and use your finger to smooth out the caulk. This will give it a clean and finished look.

Note: Give the caulk 12 to 15 hours to dry and set. After this your windows should be airtight for the season.
